Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures and the GATT Policy Negotiations

In relation to the GATT Policy Negotiations, Christopher Mark (1993) provided the following explanation and/or definition of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures: Health and safety standards affecting imports. (“Sanitary” regulations are those applying to human and animal products; “phytosanitary” regulations apply to plants and plant products.) Such standards are established to ensure that animals and plants and their products are safe for consumption and not damaging to the environment. See also Codex Alimentarius.
