Respondent

In proceedings in the I.C.J. in contentious cases, the defendant State is referred

to as the respondent. While this term does not appear in the I.C.J. Statute, it does in art

38(4) of the Rules ofCourt of 1978 (I.C.J. Acts a11d Documents, No. 6). Cf applicant.
