Introduction to Refugee Outlook

Because the causes of political and economic upheaval-deprivation of human rights, civil war, lack of food and other resources-remain in operation in the developing world, the large-scale movement of refugees is bound to continue, mostly in the countries least able to provide for their inhabitants. The early 2000s saw a decline in the number of refugees, but that trend was reversed in 2006, largely as a result of the number of Iraqis seeking refuge in Jordan and Syria. Afghans and Iraqis together made up about one-fifth of the world’s refugees at the end of 2006. ” (1)
