Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in 2011

United States views on international law (based on the document “Digest of U.S. Practice in International Law”): On December 19, 2011, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment that included a paragraph proposed by the United States that expressed concern “with all acts which can amount to torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment committed against persons exercising their rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression in all regions of the world.” U.N. Doc. A/RES/66/150.
