Bibliographic Coupling in Legal Information Retrieval

The following is a basic concept of Bibliographic Coupling in relation to information retrieval. In addition to this, Bibliographic Coupling may be applied to legal texts, including case law, legislation and scholarly works. Bibliographic coupling is a special form of clustering based on reference citations. The underlying idea is that two or more documents are related (bibliographically coupled) if they share the same reference citations. The more reference citations they share (the higher the threshold), the more closely related they may be. See also co-citation.

Bibliography in Legal Information Retrieval

The following is a basic concept of Bibliography in relation to information retrieval. In addition to this, Bibliography may be applied to legal texts, including case law, legislation and scholarly works. In this book, we have subsumed the term bibliography under the broader, newer term IR database, but bibliography and bibliographies are fine old terms that mean writing (graphy) about books (biblio), thus they have come to mean lists and descriptions of books. There is no reason to limit their meaning to books, because the biblio part of the word comes from the Greek for papyrus leaves! So by extension, bibliographies can deal with messages, texts, and documents in any format and medium, just as Information Retrieval databases do.

Bibliography in Law Libraries

The follow definition of Bibliography is of use in law library research: A list of items (books, articles, videos) arranged in a logical order and having something in common such as the author, or a common subject. Books and scholarly articles often have bibliographies at the end of the work, listing the information sources on which they are based. A bibliography contains a brief citation describing the source used, so the reader can locate the item.
