With very few exceptions, all goods imported into the United States must be declared with the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection of the Department of Homeland Security. Duties vary according to the type, value, and origin of the merchandise, as well as a number of other factors. Penalties for violating Customs laws or procedures can be quite substantial. If your client does any significant amount of importation, you should acquaint yourself with the basics of Cus- toms law. Updated from the ALI-ABA Course of Study Going International: Fund- amentals of International Business Transactions, May 13-15, 2004.
