The store of critical metals and other industrial commodities maintained by the U.S. government as a buffer against disruptions of supply in times of war or national emergency. The maintenance of such stockpiles is authorized by the Strategic and Critical Materials Stockpiling Act of 1946.

In relation to international trade economy, Christopher Mark (1993) provided the following definition of Strategic Stockpile: A store or critical metals or other industrial commodities maintained by a government as a buffer against supply disruptions in times of war or national emergency.
