Introduction to Powell Lewis Franklin Jr

Lewis Franklin Powell, Jr. (1907-1998), American jurist and associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He was born in Suffolk, Virginia, and educated at Washington and Lee and Harvard universities. He began his law practice in Richmond, Virginia, in 1931. As chairman of the Richmond school board from 1952 to 1961, he was largely responsible for that city’s peaceful integration of the public schools. During the 1960s he served as president of three American legal associations, and in 1971 President Richard M. Nixon named him to the Supreme Court. In his years on the Court, he was considered to be a moderate who often cast the decisive vote in close decisions. He retired from the Court in June 1987.” (1)
