Generic Posting in Legal Information Retrieval

The following is a basic concept of Generic Posting in relation to information retrieval. In addition to this, Generic Posting may be applied to legal texts, including case law, legislation and scholarly works. Generic posting is the use of a broader more generic term in addition to a specific term to represent a topic or feature of a message, text or documentary unit. Some experts make a distinction between generic posting and up-posting, limiting generic posting to the use of a broader, more generic term in place of a specific term (e.g., using furniture in place of sofas) while using up-posting for the use of both a specific term and a broader, more generic term (using both sofas and furniture).

Postings in Legal Information Retrieval

The following is a basic concept of Postings in relation to information retrieval. In addition to this, Postings may be applied to legal texts, including case law, legislation and scholarly works. The term postings refers to the assignment or posting of a term to a record for a documentary unit. It is used for term-document associations regardless of whether a term was assigned by a human or by machine algorithm. The number of postings is valuable information for searchers because it indicates how many documents in an Information Retrieval database will be retrieved by a particular term.
