Summary of Optional Bill Of Lading
An ocean bill of Lading (read this and related legal terms for further details) that gives the carrier the prerogative of stowing the cargo anywhere aboard the vessel at his convenience; the effect is to permit cargoes suitable to travel under an “under deck”bill of lading to travel on deck. For legal and insurance reasons, cargo is regarded as having been stowed under deck, irrespective of its actual location, unless the bill of lading is endorsed “on deck.”
