Obiter Dictum (Latin for ‘a remark in passing’), any casual observation; in law, something said by the judge, while giving judgment, that is not essential to the decision. The plural is obiter dicta. Some obiter dicta have persuasive authority in future cases, depending on the seniority of the judge who made the remarks. ” (1)
