National Champions and International Trade Economy

In relation to international trade economy, Christopher Mark (1993) provided the following definition of National Champions: Firms that are the focus of government efforts to consolidate a national industry through industrial targeting. Such policies may be prompted by a global shakeout –aimed at regrouping marginal companies around a “champion” as a counter to consolidation into multinational corporations –or as an alternative to permanent protection of noncompetitive firms.
