Datafreight Receipt

Datafreight Receipt

Summary of Datafreight Receipt

A document issued by some steamship operators in lieu of a bill of LADING (read this and related legal terms for further details) on straight consignment shipments. Rather than issue a formal bill of lading, the carrier transmits to his agent at the port of destination, by telex or other telecommunication hookup, details of the shipment and the name of the party authorized to receive the goods. Inasmuch as no bill of lading is issued, the data- freight system cannot be used in transactions where an order bill of lading is called for.
