Neoliberalism
The study of international relations: Neoliberalism
Introduction to Neoliberalism
Neoliberalism, also called neoliberal institutionalism, emerged in the 1980s as a new liberal response to realism. Neoliberals believe that the UN and other international institutions can play an important role in resolving conflicts and that it makes more sense for nations to cooperate and work toward long-term mutual gains rather than focusing on short-term individual gains. Neoliberals agree with realists that nations act only out of self-interest, but they do not share the pessimism of realists about the possibility for international cooperation. Instead, neoliberals believe nations can cooperate fairly often because it is in their best interests to do so. ” (1)
