Proctor

Proctor

Summary of Proctor

Derived from the Latin procurator, a person who formerly served as an advocate in an ecclesiastical or admiralty court. The title proctor in admiralty was applied to lawyers admitted to admiralty courts. The reorganization of the Federal court structure, and the elimination of admiralty courts, per se, have caused the title to fall into disuse. However, the Maritime Law Association of the United States does accord the title to lawyers who have been members of the association for at least four years and who have acquired additional professional training in the field of maritime law.
