Introduction to Garrote
Garrote, capital punishment by strangulation without hanging, once widely used in both Spain and Portugal. A metal collar that encircled the victim’s neck was tightened with a screw until death occurred. Such executions were originally performed by twisting a cord around the victim’s neck with the aid of a short stick called a garrote.” (1)
