Affirmation
Affirmation
Affirmation, in law, solemn declaration made instead of taking a sworn oath by a person who has no religious belief or who objects on religious grounds to taking an oath. The privilege of affirming was first granted to the Quakers (who refused to take oaths) during the reign of William III (of England, Scotland, and Ireland, 1689-1702), and gradually extended to other categories of people.
