Summary of Voluntary Stranding

A grounding which results from the design and actions of the master to save the ship from imminent peril. Costs and sacrifices resulting from the voluntary act are recoverable in General Average (read this and related legal terms for further details). However, recovers in general average will be barred if the stranding would have occurred without the intervention of the vessel’s management.
