Introduction to United Nations Institute for Training and Research

United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), independent organization that trains diplomats and United Nations (UN) delegates to make the most efficient use of the UN and its agencies. The organization also analyzes UN programs, functions, and procedures.

Since its founding in 1965, UNITAR has trained thousands of individuals from more than 175 countries. It has sponsored numerous seminars and international conferences. UNITAR has also issued more than 200 publications on subjects as varied as marine pollution, external debt management, and the “brain drain” of scholars and scientists who leave emerging nations for developed ones.

UNITAR holds orientation courses for new diplomats, classes for Security Council members, and workshops on the negotiation of international agreements. In addition, it offers training courses in preventive diplomacy, international peacekeeping, and environmental law and policy.

UNITAR depends on voluntary contributions from participating governments and privately-raised funds. It has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.” (1)
