Arbitration and Related Actions Arising From the Softwood Lumber Agreement in 2011

United States views on international law (based on the document “Digest of U.S. Practice in International Law”): The United States has availed itself of the dispute resolution provisions under the 2006 Softwood Lumber Agreement (“SLA”) in three separate proceedings. Documents related to these proceedings are available at (internet link) ustr.gov/trade-topics/enforcement/dispute-settlement-proceedings/2006-softwood-lumber-agreement. One of these disputes was resolved by the 2009 award of a London Court of International Arbitration (“LCIA”) tribunal. see this world legal encyclopedia in relation with the year 2009 at 442-44. Arbitration and Related Actions Arising From the Softwood Lumber Agreement in 2013

United States views on international law [1] in relation to Arbitration and Related Actions Arising From the Softwood Lumber Agreement: (As reviewed in this legal encyclopedia in relation to international law issues in the year 2012) at 386, the United States and Canada agreed to extend the 2006 Softwood Lumber Agreement Between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of Canada (“SLA”). However, a dispute arose between the parties as to whether Canada's obligation to collect the Compensatory Adjustments awarded by the Tribunal in London Court of Arbitration (“LCIA”) Arbitration No. 81010 should cease upon the expiration of the original agreement. On September 30, 2013, Canada and the United States submitted a joint request for arbitration in the LCIA, seeking to have the original tribunal in LCIA Arbitration No. 81010 resolve the parties' dispute as to interpreting the Award.
