Summary of Shipping Documents

A general term relating to any of several documents customarily associated with the international shipment of merchandise. Among these documents are a bill of lading (or Air Waybill), Certificate Of Origin, customs or consular INVOICE, insurance certificate, DOCK receipt (qq.v.), and inspection certificates. Shipping documents are usually required by letters of credit and in transactions involving bills of lading.

Meaning of Shipping Documents, according to the Dictionary of International Trade (Global Negotiator): Documents or electronic files that detail how a shipment has taken or should take place. Typical shipping documents include CMR document, bill of lading, air waybill, sea waybill and multimodal transport document.
