Satellite State

Satellite State

Summary of Satellite State

A country that is heavily dependent upon or strongly influenced by another state, so that the policies of the satellite are largely shaped by the nation it orbits. A satellite condition may arise as a result of economic dependence, proximity to a significantly stronger power, or idealogical fealty (as in the case of certain communist states led by Moscow).
