Therefore, engaging in public-oriented relations is also inherent in government management. Public sector public relations (PR) can be divided into three rubrics: required activities that are integral to the publicness of public administration, optional activities related to pragmatic managerial efficiency, and politically oriented efforts. For the specific uses of PR in government, this entry emphasizes the purposes of an external communication effort. A typology of all PR purposes in public administration identifies eight distinct purposes, all of which are linked to the democratic, managerial, or political aspects of PR in government.
