Popular Initiative
Popular Initiative in Election Law
Technique used in direct democracies, whereby citizens have the right to ask their representatives to adopt or amend a text (e.g. a law or constitution). Popular initiatives occur within a legal framework. For example, a period of time is defined during which a minimum number of signatures in support of the initiative must be collected from qualified voters.
