Ontologies in Legal Information Retrieval

The following is a basic concept of Ontologies in relation to information retrieval. In addition to this, Ontologies may be applied to legal texts, including case law, legislation and scholarly works. Ontologies for Information Retrieval attempt (or claim) to raise the level of more traditional thesauri to the realms of virtual reality (ontology is the study of being or existence and came into Information Retrieval from artificial intelligence!). Ontologies are generally created for machine manipulation, whereas thesauri are generally designed for human use.
