Introduction to Mufti

Mufti, title of a consulting ecclesiastical lawyer in Muslim countries, who, on request, advises trial judges on the application of religious law in a memorandum called a fetwa. Theoretically, any man of learning and respected opinion can issue fetwas when requested; but the majority of the Muslim states now appoint official muftis for each judicial district.” (1)
