Summary of Mitbestimmung
The West German version o: codetermination, i.e., the participation of labor in directing the company. Labor codetermination in Germany arose following World War I and was mandated in the coal and steel industries after World War II. The law provides for a board of twenty-one members: ten representing the shareholders, ten representing labor, and one neutral member selected jointly. In 1976 the act was expanded to embrace a great many industries, and businesses employing more than five hundred workers. See vredling directive.
