Access to Media in Election Law

The right and ability of each candidate to appear in audiovisual media and use any other means to communicate his or her political programme, values and principles to the public. Equal access to media is one of the prerequisites of a fair election.

Media in Election Law

Any written, audiovisual, digital or other means of communicating information. The media plays a fundamental role in an election campaign and in voter information. In contemporary democracies, and in particular during election time, this role is regulated by law and monitored.

Neutrality of Media in Election Law

Principle by which media outlets, particularly during an election period, provide fair, impartial nondiscriminatory and equal coverage of electoral events and present various political, economic and social actors, without favouritism or a preference for any specific actor.

Private or Paid Media in Election Law

Any media outlet (print, audiovisual, digital) which, for a fee, offers its services to a party or candidate for the purpose of communicating their political platform or publishing electoral advertisements. Media buying should be undertaken on a non-discriminatory basis and with standard fees. Usually, the electoral legal framework will determine spending limits for candidates, along with guidelines on appropriate messaging, particularly in regard to hate speech and discrimination.
