Media Coverage in Election Law

Role played by the media in informing the public about an event such as an election.

Media Monitoring in Election Law

Systematic assessment of media coverage of the election process and, in particular, of the election campaign in order to evaluate its role in ensuring transparent and fair elections. This assessment examines how different actors in the election process, in particular candidates, are treated in the media. Media monitoring is usually conducted by an election authority, national or international observers and by civil society. It is also intended to promote the neutrality of the media and equal treatment of candidates, in terms of coverage, airtime, etc.

Media Monitoring Report in Election Law

A report written by a country's media regulatory body, by national or international observer groups or by other civil society groups to evaluate media coverage of the election process and determine whether different candidates were covered in a fair and neutral manner and if they were given equal access to the media.

Media Regulatory Body in Election Law

Commission or official body that establishes rules, codes of conduct and codes of ethics in the media and ensures that they are followed. These apply to all forms of media – electronic, audiovisual and written, or to any other means of providing information. The body may be governmental or independent from the government.
