Best Match Syntax in Legal Information Retrieval

The following is a basic concept of Best Match Syntax in relation to information retrieval. In addition to this, Best Match Syntax may be applied to legal texts, including case law, legislation and scholarly works. Best match syntax refers to a growing variety of electronic term-matching methods that apply techniques for predicting potential relevance of documentary units in response to a search statement and then ranking documentary units according to predicted relevance scores. Because the most common approaches are based on some method of assigning weights to terms (search terms, index terms or both), this type of syntax can be called weighted term syntax. Particular models of weighted term syntax include the vector space model, the probabilistic model, and the language model.
