Marks And Numbers

Summary of Marks And Numbers

The use of identifying symbols and numbers on Break-Bulk (read this and related legal terms for further details) cargoes to differentiate among shipments. The practice, still widely followed, originated as a response to the illiteracy common among dock workers in some ports. A shipper assigns a given mark to cargo traveling to a common point and numbers the packages sequentially. The marks ordinarily include the port of destination and may also include the consignee’s name, although this name is often omitted for security reasons. The marks and numbers so used are customarily shown on the ocean bill of lading.
