Data and Metadata
In the context of records management, metadata is a structured or semi-structured information
which enables the creation, management and use of records through time and
within and across domains in which they are created. Source: Archiving Metadata Forum working definition (archiefschool.nl/amf).
Note: the distinction between data and its metadata can be unclear. For example, it is usually clear
that the essential indexing data for a record (title, date etc.) is part of that record’s metadata.
However, the audit trail for a record, or the retention schedule for a record, can validly be
considered to be either data or metadata, depending on the context. Different types of metadata can
be defined, for example, for indexing, for preservation, for rendering etc.
