International Institute for the Unification of Private Law Outline

UNIDROIT is an independent governmental body created for the purpose of promoting the unification of substantive private law. It was initially established by Italy and open to the countries of the world to join under an agreement between the Italian Government and the League of Nations (which existed between 1919 and 1939). In 1940, the Italian Government drafted a new constitution for the institute and invited other countries to accede to the constitution. Under the constitution, the headquarters of the institute are located in Rome. The institute prepares and recommends drafts of conventions for unifying rules of private law to its members, non-members and international organisations. It functions as a research institute and initiator of ideas for the purpose of harmonizing or unifying rules of private law in the world. Australia is a member of UNIDROIT.(1)
