Summary of Improper Inducement

A payment or remission in violation of law, tariffs, or industry practice, provided by a transportation company to a shipper in order to obtain business. Inducements may take the form of bribes, unauthorized rebates of freight paid, absorption of demurrage charges, or excessive entertainment of company officials. In some cases such inducements may be illegal, bringing penalties upon the shipper and/or carrier.
