Hazardous Cargo

Hazardous Cargo

Summary of Hazardous Cargo

Cargo having dangerous properties requiring special stowage or handling in transit. Precise regulations defining what is hazardous and prescribing how such materials shall be packed, labeled, and documented are to be found in Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations. In addition, goods going abroad may be obliged to comply with foreign regulations as well, commonly the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (read this and related legal terms for further details). For purposes of transport, the word hazardous is used to embrace items not necessarily dangerous by their nature. For example, the transport of magnetized substances by air is regulated to ensure that the aircraft’s compass is not affected.
