Ex Post Facto Laws in Constitutional Law

From the Comparative Constitutions Project: Ex post facto literally means after the fact. Legislation is called ex post facto if the law attempts to extend backwards in time or punish acts committed before the date of the law’s approval. Therefore, a prohibition of ex post facto laws means that government officials cannot make laws that punish crime crimes committed before the law was enacted.
