European Communities
Summary of European Communities
The name for the collective institution that embraces the European Economic Community, the European Atomic Energy Community, and the European Coal And Steel Community (qq.v.). Each of the three entities was established by separate convention, the earliest of which was the Treaty of Paris of 1951 forming the European Coal and Steel Community. Initially, each community possessed its own council and organs of government. A 1965 treaty among the members of the three institutions established that, effective July 1, 1967, the three communities, while continuing to possess separate legal identities, would share common organs of administration and would be known as the European Communities.
