Euronet

Hello

Euronet

Summary of Euronet

An international, computer-based network founded by the European Communities to foster the movement of information among member states. Euronet consists of five nodes, or distribution points, located in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Rome, and Zurich; five additional access points have been established in Dublin, Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Luxembourg. Information suppliers to Euronet consist of 192 data banks coordinated into the Direct Information Access Network for Europe (D.I.A.N.E.). The participating data banks provide information on commercial, scientific, legal, engineering, and social science topics, to be used by researchers from all member countries, including business entities.

Euronet was sanctioned by the Council of the European Communities on June 24, 1971; the system was inaugurated on February 13, 1980, and came into commercial operation on April 1 of that year.

Organized under an agreement among European telecommunications authorities, Euronet has been effectively replaced as an access mode by national data links.
