Employment in the CEDAW

Article 11 of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) stipulates, in relation to Employment, that all countries are required to eliminate discrimination in employment, with special attention given to discrimination on the basis of pregnancy. They should ensure that women have equality with men regarding the rights to:

• work

• employment and selection for employment

• choice of profession

• promotion, job security and benefits

• vocational training

• equal pay for work of equalvalue

• social security and paid leave

Employment by Economic Activity (in the Human Development Area)

In this context, Employment by Economic Activity means: _mployment in industry, agriculture or services as defined according to the International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) system (revisions 2 and 3). Industry refers to mining and quarrying, manufacturing, construction and public utilities (gas, water and electricity). Agriculture refers to activities in agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing. Services refer to wholesale and retail trade; restaurants and hotels; transport, storage and communications; finance, insurance, real estate and business services; and community, social and personal services.
