Economic Community of the West African States Outline
The community was meant to be a customs union and was based on a treaty signed in 1975. Its membership consists of the Ivory Coast, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Upper Volta, Benin, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, Togo, Cape Verde, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The community adopts lower tariffs between its members.(1)
