Economic and Social Council of the United Nations Outline

ECOSOC is one of the major organs of the UN, consisting of 54 members. Its main function is to develop and coordinate social and economic policies of UN members. There are five regional commissions under ECOSOC: the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE); the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE); the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA); the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA); and the Economic Commission for Western Asia (ECWA). There are also various committees or commissions within ECOSOC dealing with particular issues, such as human rights, commodity agreements, status of women and narcotic drugs.(1)
