In the words of the Tarlton Law Library (University of Texas School of Law):
“Andres Cornejo y Castaño, caballero de Santiago, was born in Almadén (Spain), the son of Don Jose Cornejo Ibarra and Dona Teresa Leocadia Castaño Estrada. Title page of Diccionario, 1779He began his career as Alcalde Hijosdalgo de la Real Chancillería de Valladolid in 1758, eventually progressing to Alcalde de Casa y Corte, and ultimately to the Consejo de Castilla in 1785.
Like so many other jurists, Cornejo began his dictionary as a tool for his own research. The Diccionario histórico y forense del derecho real de España sought to comprehensively describe Spanish law. The success of the work of Denis Diderot, Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers (1751-1772), inspired many other eighteenth-century encyclopedic dictionaries. It includes terms that could be easily misunderstood and the names of legal institutions and offices. In addition to defining the terms, the entries provide historical background and cite applicable laws. Cornejo’s Diccionario appeared as a one-volume work in 1779. He published the second volume in 1784 as an appendix, containing additional terms omitted from the first volume.”
