Deadweight in International Trade

Meaning of Deadweight, according to the Dictionary of International Trade (Global Negotiator): The maximum carrying capacity of a ship, expressed in tons, of cargo, stores, provisions and bunker fuel. Deadweight is used interchangeably with deadweight tonnage and deadweight carrying capacity. A vessel's capacity for cargo is less than its total deadweight tonnage.
