Customs Waters

Customs Waters

Summary of Customs Waters

That portion of the high seas, not to exceed twelve miles from shore, within which law enforcement personnel of the United States are authorized to board foreign craft to enforce American laws. In those cases where a treaty between the United States and another state authorizes boarding in an area other than the twelve- mile zone, the area so specified constitutes customs waters for the vessels of the treaty partner. See Customs Enforcement AREA.
