The secton address the following areas: Dealing with procedural, policy and strategy issues, using critical thinking and strategic planning, securing and managing multiple crime scenes, using internationally recognised models of investigation and decision making, use of policy books to develop accountable and auditable systems and developing strategies for dealing with the media and with the community impact of crime.

Internet Research and Criminal Investigations

The ability to interrogate the internet effectively and securely is becoming an ever more important tool for the professional law enforcement investigator.

Law enforcement officials should use search engines and social networking sites more effectively so as to gather intelligence. Basic internet security and safety are features of their training. Specifically, these forces may research telephone numbers, addresses and individuals using a variety of methods. They may research companies and have methods to identify website ownership. They know techniques to avoid compromising individual people or an investigation. techniques to conduct organised and effective on-line searches required to interrogate the current World Wide Web. Their training include harvesting social network and Deep Web sources of information. Using techniques to maintain anonymity for the researcher, they are trained in order to maximise the potential of all available sources of information and intelligence on the Internet.

Counter Corruption Investigation

The threat associated with corruption of police and public officials is increasing. This threat can seriously undermine operational activity and result in significant damage to organisational reputation and stakeholder confidence.

The section covers the meaning and definition of corruption and approaches which will enable an effective investigative strategy to be developed. Broader discussions will include the concepts of ethics and integrity and vulnerability to corruption. The use of a range of overt, covert and internal tactics will be considered and will include the use of options such as drug testing and intelligence led integrity tests. The importance of continuing a misconduct enquiry along with any criminal investigation will be examined.
