Country Groups
Summary of Country Groups
A classification scheme provided in U.S. export control regulations. The countries of the world are divided into seven groups, plus Canada; each group is designated by a letter of the alphabet. Export licensing requirements vary from group to group. An individual seeking to learn the export licensing regulations for a specific commodity to a particular country would look up the Schedule B number for the product on the Commodity Control List; a notice next to each commodity on the list stipulates whether a validated export license is required, and if so, for which countries, by country group. The country groups are as follows:
Group Q—Romania Group S—Libya
Group T—All countries and territories of the Western Hemisphere, excepting Cuba and Canada Group V—All countries not included in any other group, except Canada
Group W—Hungary and Poland Group Y—Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Estonia, German Democratic Republic, Laos, Latvia. Lithuania, Mongolian People's Republic, USSR Group Z—Cuba, Kampuchea, North Korea. Vietnam
Canada is not included in any country group inasmuch as exports to that country are not normally subject to controls. See Cocom; Export Control Act.
