Civic Center

Civic Center, focal land area within a community, containing one or more dominant public structures. The term civic center has also been used more recently to refer to the entire central business district of a community. In planning this type of civic center, special attention is usually paid to the groupings of public structures. Eminent examples of the first definition include the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, Italy, and Saint Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco) in Venice, Italy. Among the numerous monumental groupings of buildings in the United States, the civic center in San Francisco can justly claim distinction. (1)
