Candidate
Candidate
Candidate, person who seeks or is nominated for an office, prize, or honor. In politics, candidates aspire to be elected to office by conducting campaigns. (1)
Candidate in Election Law
Any person who aspires to public office and fulfills the eligibility criteria set by the Election Management Body (EMB) or runs in an election and campaigns to obtain votes from voters, either as an independent or on behalf of a political party.
Candidate Registration in Election Law
Process by which political parties and candidates enroll to participate in the elections, on the basis of eligibility and other legal criteria as required, such as endoresments and deposits. The request usually involves filling out a form and sending it to the authority that has legal responsibility for registering candidates. The deadlines and requirements that candidates must meet are dictated by the electoral law.
Endorsement of a Candidate in Election Law
Presentation of an individual by a political party or group of people as their official candidate for an election. In certain countries and for certain posts, such as president of the republic, a candidacy is not valid unless he or she is endorsed by a specific number of people – electors or elected officials, at a local or national level.
Top or Lead Candidate in Election Law
In a list-based voting system, this is the candidate chosen by his or her political party or organisation to head the list. The choice of top/leading candidates is very important, especially in a closedlist, proportional representation system, since the candidate in this position has the highest chance of actually securing a seat when these are allocated among competing lists. The choice of lead candidate is crucial since his or her charisma and popularity increases the visibility and credibility of the list he or she heads.
