CAB International

CAB International (CABI), formerly the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau, an intergovernmental organization owned and governed by 36 member nations. Founded in 1929, CABI gathers and disseminates scientific information to developing nations, with special emphasis on sustainable agriculture and forestry, biodiversity, and the maintenance of ecosystems.

Scientific institutes founded and operated by CABI conduct research in entomology, parasitology (study of parasites), mycology (study of fungi), and biological control. The institutes also provide services to identify pests and disease organisms that afflict crops and livestock. This work helps scientists around the world to implement pest controls and to increase food production in environmentally friendly ways. CABI also operates field stations in Kenya, Malaysia, Pakistan, Switzerland, and Trinidad that serve regional agricultural needs.

CABI largely funds its operations through sale of information resources from its vast bibliographic database, which contains more than three million abstracts. Researchers collect and distribute this information to the world community in journals and on CD-ROMs (compact discs). CABI also has established an information technology development center, which seeks to speed up information retrieval and help scientists avoid duplicating research. CABI’s headquarters is in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, England. (1)
