Summary of Bureau Veritas
One of the major international ship classification societies, established in France in 1826. Bureau Veritas establishes standards for, oversees the construction of, and classifies vessels and marine equipment, including cargo containers. As of January 1, 1983, tonnage classified by the society amounted to 35,026,210 gross register tons, embracing 8,083 vessels; this constitutes 8.25 percent of the world's tonnage, and 11 percent of the world's fleet.
